I often compare the current times to the turbulent years between 1968 and 1973, when the world last underwent a series of seismic shifts in the way things were done. During this period, not only was there a sense of instability, but also one of liberation, and ultimately, progress. It was a time when ‘everything changed’. I propose that we are entering a similar era, today.
Renowned American Futurist Peter Leyden is a good friend of mine, and colleague, who also sees the coming decade as marking a rare juncture in history, bringing an unusual number of fundamental system changes that will require a series of paradigm shifts in how the world will now work. He sees these system changes as largely positive and adding up to what he calls The Great Progression that will play out over the next 25 years.
For this special event, we are teaming up to look closer at a dozen of the most important paradigm shifts of the 2020s that everyone should better understand.
These paradigm shifts have been accelerated by the COVID era with its many perma-change challenges, and three concurrent revolutions: the digital revolution, the sustainability revolution, and the purpose revolution.
We believe it is imperative that all those in leadership positions, whether in the corporate world, government, politics, or civil society, develop a strong intuition about the Future – a future mindset if you will – because our mindset contains our future.
The future isn’t science fiction anymore – it is already here, and it is already having an impact on the world around us, so let’s dig in and make sure we can be architects of our preferred future, not the victims of someone else’s.
Here are the 12 shifts that we will endeavour to explain, each from our own perspective, taking turns.
- The Mega-Challenge: From a focus on economic issues to a focus on climate and planet
- Energy: from carbon (fossil) to clean
- Transportation: from combustion engines to electric
- Politics: from conservative to progressive and inclusive
- Culture: from Boomer/GenX-centric to Millennial/GenZ-centric
- Capitalism: from shareholder to stakeholder
- Economics: from private sector to public sector
- Work: from physical and white collar to digital & virtual (new collar or no collar)
- Production: from industrial to biological
- Intelligence: from IQ to EQ, from logic to human agency
- Geopolitics: from countries and nations to global consciousness
- Medical: from sick care to health care
In their unique American and European/Global viewpoints and styles, Peter and Gerd make a perfect team– this is a show not to be missed! Peter and Gerd will present their favourite shifts, each, and then discuss with the audience via live chat.
“People, Planet, Purpose, and Prosperity” is Gerd Leonhard’s motto, and helping to create “The Good Future” is his key objective. Gerd is one of the top-rated futurists worldwide; he has presented at over 1700 leading conferences and events over the past 20 years. Gerd has influenced and inspired Millions to “imagine and create a better tomorrow”. He was named one of Wired UK’s Most Influential Europeans in 2015 and is listed as #7 in the global ranking of futurists.
As a leading voice on the future of humanity, and the bestselling author of “Technology vs Humanity: The Coming Clash Between Man and Machine”, Gerd has built a global reputation as the go-to keynote speaker and thought leader when it comes to digital ethics, human-centric technology, sustainability, and the need for a new, future-fit economic logic.
Peter Leyden has spent his career in a wide range of roles figuring out the future, explaining what’s probably coming next, and helping envision how we can build a better world. He came to San Francisco at the beginning of the digital revolution to work with the founders of WIRED magazine. He then learned about the future’s business by working with the founders of the pioneering strategic foresight firm Global Business Network, and eventually founded two of his own media startups focused on the future.
Leyden now is considered a thought leader on the future, on the impact of new technologies, and on the repercussions of megatrends. He has worked for 25 years as a futurist and tech expert through Keppler Speakers, giving keynotes on roughly a monthly basis throughout America. He’s written two influential books on the future that went into multiple languages and most recently written popular online pieces like The Great Progression, 2025 to 2050. He is regularly interviewed by the media and podcasts.
